MANUFACTURE
n. f.

Fabrication de certains produits de l’industrie. La manufacture des étoffes de laine et de soie. Depuis un siècle, tous les genres de manufactures se sont perfectionnés. Il vieillit en ce sens, on dit plus ordinairement Fabrication.

Il désigne aussi le Bâtiment où l’on fabrique, mais, dans ce sens, il n’est plus guère employé que dans les expressions suivantes : Manufacture de tabacs. Manufacture de glaces, de soieries. Manufacture de draps d’Elbeuf. La manufacture de tapisseries des Gobelins. La manufacture de porcelaine de Sèvres. Dans tous les autres cas on se sert du mot Usine.

Il peut se dire aussi de l’Ensemble des Ouvriers de la manufacture. Toute la manufacture fut licenciée.
